Remember how last night I mentioned that my laptop was acting funny?
I was totally in denial. It was dying, and there was nothing I could do about it. I was clinging to hope that Paul would use his magical computer powers (or, you know, call the Dell guy) and fix it.
No such luck. My hard drive is toast.
The good news is that it's still completely under warranty, so it won't cost us a penny-- Dell even sends us a box to pay for the shipping. The bad news is that I had been lulled into a false sense of security by the fact that it is a brand new laptop, and I hadn't backed anything up yet.
Every Friday when Julie watches Brady in the morning, I have been writing. Short stories, stories for Brady, articles I'd like to publish some day, even some poetry. It's all gone now, and I have no idea how I'll duplicate it again.
I know that in the grand scheme of things this is SO not a big deal. The economy is in the pooper, Americans are fighting in wars in scary far-away places, and there's still no cure for cancer. Believe me-- I realize that this ranks way down there on the tragedies list.
But right now, I just want my poetry back. Sigh.
The moral of the story-- back up anything you don't want to lose! Do it early and do it often! Stop reading this and do it right now!
